The widow of Pulwama martyr H Guru who has sleepless nights dealing with her husband’s death, has alleged that her husband’s family is pressuring her to marry her brother-in-law so that the compensation money remains in the family.
Speculation in Gudigere and nearby towns is Kalavathi, the 20-year-old widow of H Guru, has received donations to the tune of over Rs 10 crore which led to a rift between her and her mother-in-law (Guru’s mother) over who gets how much. Due to this, Kalavathi, earlier this week, approached Karataka police seeking help. She said that with relief funds and the promise of a permanent job coming her way post Guru’s death, his family is upset and afraid of losing access to these funds as many of the cheques were in Kalavathi’s name.
According to several media reports, the family was now even insisting that Kalavathi marry her brother-in-law, a move that she opposes vehemently.
The family had received funds from the general public, state government, ministers, and many other agencies apart from the job offer to Kalavathi.
Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had announced compensation of Rs 25 lakh to Guru’s family, and promised a government job for Kalavathi. Infosys Foundation, the CSR arm of the IT giant, had announced it would give Rs 10 lakh to the families of all the martyrs.
According to sources, top district officials had warned the family that the relief money would be blocked if the family got into a dispute over who would administer the funds.
Guru and Kalavathi had been married for 10 months before he was killed in the attack. He had visited home on leave for 10 days and had re-joined duty on the day he was killed in the attack. Kalavathi is reportedly pursuing an MA degree.
