Maddow, who was born in Castro Valley, California, on 1 April 1973, was raised in a conservative Catholic family and community. After graduating from Castro Valley High School, she attended Stanford University to earn a bachelor’s degree in public policy. She received a Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University, where she earned a doctorate in philosophy and politics.
In 1999, Maddow accepted a job as a radio host at WRNX in Massachusetts before joining WRSI as the host of “Big Breakfast.” Two years later, she left WRSI and joined the brand-new Air America Radio to co-host “Unfiltered” with hip hop legend Chuck D and “The Daily Show” co-creator Lizz Winstead.
She joined MSNBC as a political analyst in January 2008. Later, she hosted “The Rachel Maddow Show” as the nation’s first openly lesbian prime-time news anchor. OAN decided to file a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Maddow, but the case was dismissed in 2020 as opinion rather than defamation. The self-narrated audiobook version of her second book, “Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the World’s Richest, Most Destructive Industry,” garnered the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album.
