On Friday, January 17, a 97-year-old woman was elected as sarpanch in the Rajasthan Panchayat Election in Sikar district. The Rajasthan election results were announced on Friday after day-long polling for the panchayat election.

Vidhya Devi, who was fielded from Puranawas gram panchayat, defeated her nearest rival Aarti Meena by 207 votes.

According to Sadhuram Jat, sub-divisional officer of Neem Ka Thana, Devi bagged 843 votes, whereas Meena could win just 636 votes.

For the uninitiated, eleven candidates were in the fray from the gram panchayat. The husband of Vidhya Devi had been a sarpanch from the panchayat for 25 years prior to 1990.

In the first phase of Rajasthan Panchayat Election 2020, polling for 26,800 wards of 2,726-gram panchayats of 87 panchayat samitis took place. There are a total of 93,20,684 voters.

According to State Election Commissioner PS Mehra, 17,242 candidates were fielded for the Sarpanch post and 42,000 for the Panch post in the election.

More than 11,000 EVM machines were used in the polls. The second phase of the sarpanch election in Rajasthan will take place on January 22, 2020.
