In one of its reports, the Reserve Bank of India, on Wednesday revealed the demonetisation data that stated that 6.7 billion pieces of Rs 1000 notes, 89 million pieces didn’t come back.
The apex bank added that 7.62 lakh pieces of counterfeit currency notes were detected in the financial year 2017 as against 6.32 lakh in 2016.
The share of the newly introduced Rs 2,000 notes in the total value of banknotes in circulation as at March-end was a little more than 50%, the RBI annual report added.
Former finance minister, P Chidambaram, reacted to the announcement on Twitter.
Rs 16000 cr out of demonetised notes of Rs 1544,000 cr did not come back to RBI. That is 1%. Shame on RBI which 'recommended' demonetisation
