Renowned Mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh passes away

He received Ph.D. in Reproducing Kernels and Operators with a Cyclic Vector from University of California, Berkeley, in 1969.

Bihar’s top mathematics mind Vashistha Narayan Singh passed away on Thursday, November 14. According to reports, his health started deteriorating earlier today, following which his family rushed me to the PMCH hospital where doctors declared him dead.

He was born on 2 April 1942 in Basantpur village of Bhojpur district in Bihar, India to Lal Bahadur Singh and Lahaso Devi. He received his primary and secondary education from Netarhat Residential School and college education from Patna Science College.

He received Ph.D. in Reproducing Kernels and Operators with a Cyclic Vector from University of California, Berkeley, in 1969. His doctoral advisor was John L. Kelley.

After receiving his PhD, he worked at NASA and then returned to India in 1971 to teach at IIT Kanpur. Late he joined TIFR, Bombay. In 1973, he was appointed as a permanent faculty in ISI Kolkata.

In 2014, he was appointed as guest faculty in Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University (BNMU) in Madhepura as a visiting professor.
