Idris Elba was born in Hackney, London, on September 6, 1972. His father, Winston, is from Sierra Leone, and his mother, Eve, is from Ghana. Winston worked at a Ford factory in Dagenham. Elba shortened his name to ‘Idris’ when he attended Canning Town High School. During this period, he became interested in the performing arts.
