A total of 14,000 students have registered for 7,202 seats in schools reserved under the 25% Right to Education (RTE) quota in Mumbai for this year. The registration concluded on Wednesday, March 4, 2020.

This year, only 5 people have registered from the mobile application that started for application by the Education Department.

This time, the Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Department of Education have put in place an integrated system for admission, under which a lottery will be conducted on March 12 to allot the seats to the Right to Education. The Education Department has also decided to complete the admission process in a single lottery this time. There is a significant increase in applications this year compared to last year. Last year 11584 applicants applied, this time this figure has reached 14 thousand.

The education department’s mobile application has got a very poor response, as only five applicants have applied through the app in Mumbai.

“Many parents want to register in person, as they often do not want to rely on online submission. We are trying to create more awareness about the app,” said an official.

Even after many attempts of awareness, it is seen that under the Right to Education, seats remain largely vacant. In 2019, on an average 80,000 seats were left vacant all over Maharashtra. At the same time, in Mumbai city, around four thousand seats were left vacant.

Significantly, the last time the process of admission was done in four rounds, yet the vacant seats remained a matter of surprise. On a large scale, people were unable to get their children admitted due to being unable to submit the document.
