The History of Saint George’s Day

It is said that Saint George was born in the region of Turkey around 280 A.D. Initially enlisted as a soldier in the Roman Army, he ascended the ranks to become Emperor Diocletian’s personal guard. Saint George’s exploits of defeating a dragon are widely recognized. The town of Silene, according to legend, had only one well, which was guarded by a dragon. Daily human sacrifices were required in order for the town’s inhabitants to obtain water from the well. During a visit from Saint Goerge, a damsel was chosen for the purpose of sacrifice. Saint George facilitated the people of Silene’s access to the well while rescuing the damsel and slaying the dragon. Following this valiant deed, the inhabitants of the town underwent a religious conversion to Christianity.

Saint George was a devout Christian during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, an anti-Christian ruler of Roman times. He declined to genuflect and offer sacrifices in honour of the Roman deities. As a consequence, he endured severe torment and was ultimately executed for his Christian faith on April 23, 303 A.D. He is interred in the municipality of Lod, Israel.

His heroic anecdotes rather than his martyrdom or resistance to the emperor account for his notoriety. According to legend, he has rescued maidens, vanquished demons, and saved individuals. These tales originated in the eleventh century and eventually gained notoriety throughout Europe and portions of Asia. St. George is most revered and commemorated in England. Once upon a time, his day was observed in the same manner as Christmas. As the patron saint of the nation, Saint George is as recognizable as the white and red flag.
