Salvation Army Founder’s Day 2024 (US): April 10 is observed as The Salvation Army Founder’s Day at all Salvation Army outposts worldwide. The Salvation Army is a member of the universal Christian Church and an international charitable organization. The Salvation Army provides a diverse range of services on a global scale, encompassing social work and emergency response.

Its objective is to fulfill human necessities without any form of bias. Established in 1865 by William Booth, The Salvation Army has since expanded from London to numerous regions worldwide, with millions of members in 132 countries.

Salvation Army Founder’s Day History

William Booth was born in Nottingham, United Kingdom, on April 10, 1829. At the age of 13, Booth’s father placed him in an apprenticeship to a pawnbroker as a result of their impoverished circumstances. Booth’s religious transformation occurred two years later. He engaged in extensive reading, self-improvement in writing and speaking, and ultimately aspired to the position of local Methodist pastor.

Booth was unemployed at the conclusion of his apprenticeship in 1848. He relocated to London the following year and secured employment with a pawnbroker. Booth ceased pawnbroking on his 23rd birthday after joining the Methodist Reform Church in 1851; he subsequently assumed the role of a full-time minister at their headquarters. Booth wed Catherine Mumford, a Methodist Reform Church member, in 1855.

In 1865, Booth and Catherine established the Christian Revival Society, subsequently renamed the Christian Mission, in the East End of London. Their objective was to impart the teachings of Jesus Christ to individuals in a manner that resonated with them; they conducted meetings at their discretion, ensuring that their material requirements were met. They aimed to reach those who traditional congregations excluded, such as the underprivileged.

The Christian Mission was redesignated as The Salvation Army in 1878. A year later, Amos Shirley traveled to Philadelphia, United States, while working unofficially for The Salvation Army as a Salvation attempt. Booth, having learned this, dispatched a small party to New York in 1880—including seven others and George Scott Railton—in order to officially launch The Salvation Army.

Australia became a member of The Salvation Army in the same year. Catherine Booth-Clibborn, also known as la Maréchale and the eldest daughter of Booth, presided over the inaugural gatherings in Paris. Rapid international expansion proceeded into additional nations. Booth endeavored to work alongside people in a culturally appropriate manner by integrating evangelism and service.
