A woman in the Saudi capital detained on Monday for not wearing a veil in public and taking a picture of herself without cover and posting it on Twitter.
Fawaz al-Maiman, the police spokesman did not name the woman. But, several websites identified her as Malak al-Shehri. She attracts huge backlash on social media after she posted a picture without the hijab in a main Riyadh street last month.
According to the police spokesman Maiman, the authority in the ultra-conservative kingdom acted as per their responsibility to check “violations of general morals”.
He said the women posted a tweet of her standing next to a popular Riyadh café. However, she was not wearing the Islamic headscarf that is essential in Saudi society.
The kingdom has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on women. It is the only nation where women are not even allowed to drive. Women in Saudi Arabia are expected to cover from head to toe when in public.
