SC Issues Notice to EC on Plea Seeking Fresh Election if NOTA Gets Majority

SC Issues Notice to EC on Plea Seeking Fresh Election if NOTA Gets Majority: As a result of a plea seeking direction from the Supreme Court to frame rules that state that if NOTA (None of the Above) wins a majority in a particular constituency, the election will be declared null and void and a new election will be held to that constituency, ANI reported.

The plea also sought to establish rules stating that candidates receiving fewer votes than NOTA would be disqualified from contested elections for a period of five years, as well as to ensure that NOTA would be properly and efficiently reported and publicized.

If a voter does not wish to support any candidate in a particular election, they can select NOTA.

Voters can reject all candidates listed on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

As reported earlier today, the Supreme Court rejected pleas seeking complete cross-verification of votes cast using electronic voting machines with a Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), saying “blindly distrusting” any aspect of the system can breed unwarranted skepticism.

According to Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, democracy is about building trust and harmony between all institutions.

During the Lok Sabha elections, these decisions were made.

Votes will be counted on June 4 after seven phases of elections from April 19 to June 1.
