A Chinese man was sentenced on Friday to 8-years in prison for detonating home-made explosives inside Shanghai’s international airport last year, said a court in the city. Three people were injured in the attack at Pudong International Airport by Zhou Xingbai on June 12.

The 29-years-old (at the time of the attack) Zhou shaped the temporary bombs using fireworks and beer bottles. As per the court, Zhou rolled three of the bomb into a crowd before attempting suicide with a knife.

Notably, two of the devices blasted injuring quite a few travelers and triggering flight cancellations and delays. Regardless of Zhou’s alleged personal problems, the court said a psychological assessment found no signs of mental sickness.

Zhou had a high-school education and worked at different jobs before relocating in 2014 to Kunshan – a city near Shanghai. He is originally from the southwestern province of Guizhou.

Zhou’s punishment was harsh as the incident occurred in a large public space, said the court statement.

In 2013, a wheelchair-bound man detonated a homemade bomb at Beijing international airport and was punished to 6-years in jail.
