Mahalaya is celebrated at the end of Shradh or Pitru Paksha, a 16 days period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors. This year, it falls on September 28. On the day of Shubho Mahalaya, almost every Bengali wakes up at 4 am in the morning, listen to the radio to the recital of Mahisasura Mardini by Birendra Krishna Bhadra to mark the beginning of Durga Pujo.

It is believed that on Mahalaya, goddess Durga descended to the earth which is celebrated by the Bengalis across the globe with much fervor and zeal. Also, it is believed that mantras called ‘Mahisasura Mardini’ invoke the goddess.

On this day, ‘tarpan’ is performed to offer prayers to the departed souls of the ancestors and give bhog to the Brahmins, along with food and materials to the needy. It is believed that Goddess Durga, accompanied by her children, steps on the planet earth that day.

Also, the banks of the rivers are filled by the worshipers from dawn to perform the rituals of ‘tarpan’. The fervor and festivity surrounding Durga Pooja and Navratri start with Mahalaya. Idols of Goddess Durga is transported to various pandals from this day.

Mahalaya brings with it all feeling of positivity, festivity, and warmth ahead of the start of most anticipated festivals.
