Sitting Bull Documentary: A new four-hour docuseries about Sitting Bull is coming to the History Channel, showing the true story of the Native American leader in a way that’s never been done before. It premieres on May 27, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and the second part airs the next day, May 28, at the same time.

The show is directed by Stephen David and uses powerful reenactments and expert interviews to tell the story. Michael Spears plays Sitting Bull, and Mo Brings Plenty is the narrator.

Sitting Bull Documentary: The Story of a Brave Leader

This series follows the journey of Sitting Bull, a Hunkpapa Lakota leader, from his early days all the way to the time he became a strong voice against the U.S. government. He was known both as a spiritual guide and a fierce warrior. One of the most famous moments in his life was when he helped lead Native warriors to victory at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, where they defeated General Custer. That win made him a legend but also brought more trouble from the U.S. government.

The docuseries also talks about important events like the Washita Massacre in 1868 and the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. These show how the U.S. army kept pushing Native people off their lands. Sitting Bull never gave up the fight to protect his people’s homes and way of life. His leadership inspired many, and he often gave away what little he had to others in his tribe.

He even joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show for a short time in 1885. During that time, he traveled and became famous, but he also faced mockery and never really felt free.
