Social Security January 2026 Payment Dates:As we step into the new year, millions of Social Security beneficiaries in California and across the United States are checking their calendars to find out exactly when their payments will hit their accounts. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a structured schedule that determines payment dates based on a beneficiary’s birth date and the type of benefit received.
How the Payment Schedule Works?
Each month, Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor benefits are disbursed on a Wednesday determined by your birthday group:
- Birthdays 1st–10th → Second Wednesday
- Birthdays 11th–20th → Third Wednesday
- Birthdays 21st–31st → Fourth Wednesday
This holds true for January 2026, meaning most beneficiaries will receive their payments on one of three dates: January 14, January 21, or January 28.

There’s a separate rule for people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 or those receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI): those recipients get their payment on the 3rd of the month, in this case January 2, 2026.
Social Security Payments Go Out December 31: Who Gets Paid?
Social Security January 2026 Payment Dates
- January 2, 2026 (Friday): Recipients who first started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or those who receive both Social Security and SSI, will see their payment.
- January 14, 2026 (Wednesday): For beneficiaries born on the 1st through the 10th of any month.
- January 21, 2026 (Wednesday): For beneficiaries born on the 11th through the 20th of any month.
- January 28, 2026 (Wednesday): For beneficiaries born on the 21st through the 31st of any month.
What About SSI Recipients?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which assists low-income elderly and disabled individuals, typically pays out on the first of each month. However, because January 1, 2026 is a federal holiday (New Year’s Day), the SSI payment for January will be issued early on December 31, 2025.
How To Report a Missing Social Security Payment?
If you don’t receive your electronic payments on the scheduled date, contact your bank or financial institution. Sometimes, the Social Security Administration experiences a delay in posting your payment.
If you still need help, call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact your local Social Security office.
For the most accurate, personalized information, the SSA recommends beneficiaries check their “my Social Security” online account or contact the SSA directly if a payment doesn’t arrive as expected.
