Social Security Payments December 31: More than seven million people in the United States will receive a Social Security payment on New Year’s Eve. The Social Security Administration will send this money early because the normal payment date falls on a holiday. This payment mainly affects people who get help through the Supplemental Security Income program.
On December 31 beneficiaries of SSI will receive their monthly payment meant for January 2026. Normally SSI money comes on the first day of every month. Since January 1 is a federal holiday the payment moves to the closest working day. This means people will see the money one day earlier than usual.
Social Security 2025 Update: COLA Rise, Taxable Earnings Cap, and SSI Changes
According to the Social Security payment calendar January’s SSI payment is also the first of three payments that will arrive at the end of the previous month.
Who Gets SSI?
SSI supports people with very low income and few resources. The program mainly helps seniors above 65 years and people who live with disabilities. The Social Security Administration says around 7.4 million people receive SSI across the country.
SSI is different from retirement or disability benefits. People do not need to pay Social Security taxes to qualify. It is a needs based program only.
How much will you Receive?
As of November 2025 the average SSI payment was $717.90 per month. The payment sent on December 31 will include a new increase. The Social Security Administration approved a 2.8% rise under the cost of living adjustment. This increase also applies to retirement SSDI and survivor benefits.
From January 2026 the maximum SSI payment for one person will rise from $967 to $994 per month. Couples who qualify together can receive up to $1,491 per month instead of $1,450.
Some people may also receive extra money from their state. This depends on where they live because not all states offer this extra payment.

January 2026 Payment Dates
People who receive retirement SSDI or survivor benefits will mostly get their January money later in the month. The payment date depends on their birthday.
Dates for January 2026 payments are as follows:
- People born from the 1st to the 10th will get paid on Wednesday January 14
- People born from the 11th to the 20th will get paid on Wednesday January 21
- People born from the 21st to the 31st will get paid on Wednesday January 28
This schedule does not apply to people who started receiving benefits before May 1997. These long term beneficiaries will get paid on Friday January 2 no matter when they were born.
People who receive both SSI and regular Social Security will get two payments. SSI will arrive on December 31 and the other benefit will come on January 2.
How Social Security Sends Payments Today?
The Social Security Administration now mostly uses electronic payments. The agency says it is “in most cases” no longer sending paper checks.
People can receive their money through direct deposit by sharing their bank details with Social Security. Retirement SSDI and survivor beneficiaries can do this online. SSI recipients must call Social Security to set it up.
Another option is the Direct Express Card. This is a debit card for people who do not have a bank account. Social Security loads the money directly onto this card every month.
