Spring Astronomy Day 2023: Spring Astronomy Day occurs on a Saturday between the middle of April and the middle of May, on or near the first quarter moon. This year’s event occurs on April 29. It is one of the two Astronomy Days held every year. Doug Berger, president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California, established the first Astronomy Day in 1973 by placing telescopes in urban areas so that city residents could observe the night sky. The purpose of the event is to partake in activities related to space. In 2007, an autumn variant of Astronomy day was initiated.
HISTORY OF SPRING ASTRONOMY DAY
Humans have been interested in the cosmos for several millennia. Consequently, it is not remarkable that astronomy is one of the earliest natural sciences known to humankind. In addition to a rational, objective spirit of inquiry, the discipline has origins in religion, mythology, cosmology, and astrology, among other human practises. Ancient civilizations associated celestial objects with deities and spirits. They linked natural phenomena to the divine in an attempt to explain the unexplainable. The Greek “Zeus” ruled the heavens, the Egyptian “Ra” was the sun, and the Indian “Chandra dev” was the moon manifest, among other examples. Thus, the earliest astrologers were clerics who viewed celestial bodies as divine; this view of astronomy constitutes astrology’s subject matter.
Babylonian astronomers conceptualised the sky as a celestial sphere and classified the stars into constellations. The ancient Greeks constructed their belief system on the basis of empirical evidence gleaned from observing the motion of the constellations. They proposed a geocentric model of the universe in which a stationary spherical Earth occupied the centre of the cosmos. This model was widely accepted in Western Civilizations for the next two millennia until Copernicus proposed a heliocentric model (a solar system with the sun at its centre). Among others, Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens adopted this cosmology. Thinkers and philosophers such as Kant, Wright, and Herschel ensured that astronomy continued to progress.
Einstein applied his general theory of relativity to the dynamics of the universe in 1917, ushering in the modern era of physical cosmology, a subfield of astronomy. Two subsequent discoveries by Edwin Hubble altered people’s views of the universe. He first demonstrated that the Andromeda galaxy was distinct from and comparable to our Milky Way galaxy. Subsequently, he discovered and demonstrated that distant galaxies were moving apart from one another, as if the universe were expanding. Today, astronomy is an intersection of physics, chemistry, and meteorology; however, its objective remains the same as that of the first priests who set out to map the heavens: ‘understanding the workings of the universe.’
