World Veterinary Day 2023: Date, History, Activities and Facts

World Veterinary Day 2023: This year, World Veterinary Day is celebrated on April 29, the last Saturday of April. It is a day dedicated to honouring the veterinarian profession. The day recognises those who have devoted their careers to animal welfare and celebrates the profession’s contribution to the health and well-being of animals, people, and communities worldwide. Veterinarians are among the most compassionate and altruistic individuals on earth. They have the difficult task of caring for injured and ill animals and assisting them recover. Today, we honour all animals, whether they are pets or food supplies, wild or domestic, as companion animals or livestock.

HISTORY OF WORLD VETERINARY DAY

In 1761, when the Royal Council of State of King Louis XV established the Royal Veterinary School in Lyon, France, students learned how to treat livestock diseases. Edinburgh hosted the first International Veterinary Congress in 1863. Professor John Gamgee of the Veterinary College of Edinburgh instigated this gathering by inviting veterinarians from Europe to a conference that later became known as the World Veterinary Congress.

Through veterinary associations, this congress sought to establish a system for the exchange of knowledge and experience between European nations. In addition to enhancing animal health and welfare for food production, the Congress sought to establish international veterinary standards.

The World Veterinary Association was founded in 1959 at a congress convened in Madrid in response to the need for a global organisation and a constitution. The mission of the World Veterinary Association is to focus on animal health and welfare, the environment, and public health, and the association has collaborated with other organisations, such as WHO, O.I.E., and F.A.O., to achieve this objective. In 2000, the World Veterinary Association established World Veterinary Day.

HOW TO OBSERVE WORLD VETERINARY DAY

Donate

You can support efforts to save the lives of animals in need by making a donation. Your donation helps feed and treat stray canines, cats, horses, and other animals in need. Donate immediately!

Participate in your community

Volunteering is a great way to help animals, but it can be difficult to locate opportunities that fit your schedule. You do not need to make time; go out and start inquiring around! Local animal shelters and rescue organisations are always seeking volunteers to assist with events, adoption weekends, and other activities.

Hold a community gathering.

Make it entertaining and educational so that people will appreciate learning about animals and their function in society. Consider adding a petting menagerie or other interactive activities to this event to make it more engaging for children and families. You could also provide food samples from local restaurants so that attendees can sample exotic dishes such as catfish fingers and turkey tails, but don’t neglect to offer vegetarian options as well.

Five IMPORTANT VETS FACTS

Vets must attend veterinary college

Veterinarians must possess a bachelor’s degree in order to enrol in veterinary school.

Tough working conditions

As a veterinarian, you must work long hours in a noisy environment: group practise veterinarians frequently take rounds being ‘on-call’ at night or on the weekends, whereas solo-practice veterinarians typically work long hours, including nights and weekends.

It goes beyond cats and canines

Some veterinarians work in food animal or private combined practises, caring for wild animals and farm animals like pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats.

Ample job opportunities

In 2021, veterinarians held approximately 86,800 jobs in the United States. Approximately 80% of veterinarians worked in group or solo practises, while the remaining 20% worked in research labs, for the government, in private industry, or at colleges and universities. By 2030, the number of jobs for veterinarians is projected to increase by 17%.

Over $90,000 annually

In lieu of stating that the average veterinarian earns less than a medical doctor, we introduce a more intriguing fact: vets earn higher salaries than the average American, and the median annual income for a veterinarian in 2020 was $99,250.

WHY WORLD VETERINARY DAY IS IMPORTANT

It promotes understanding of veterinary medicine

This day highlights the significance of veterinary medicine, its role in safeguarding animal health and well-being, and its application to human medicine. We adore it!

We hear about the job of the veterinarian

It is an opportunity for veterinarians to emphasise their role in protecting public health and welfare. Veterinarians advocate for animal welfare and promote responsible pet ownership.
