SSI Payment Amounts by State: There is a lot of complexity involved in understanding how different factors affect Social Security Income (SSI) payments.
The maximum monthly SSI payment in 2024 will be $943 for an individual and $1,415 for a couple.
You may receive a different payment depending on several factors, including your income, your living situation, and the composition of your household.
Financial assistance is provided by the SSI program to low-income and resource-constrained individuals.
The amount of SSI you receive can, however, be reduced by any income you earn.
The process is as follows:
It is estimated that your SSI payment is reduced by about $1 for every $2 you earn from work.
SSI payments are reduced by about $1 for every $1 you receive from non-work sources such as disability benefits, unemployment benefits, or pensions.
The income of your spouse can also affect your SSI benefits if you live with them.
A reduction in SSI payments may also affect children living with their parents who receive SSI.
Supplements to federal SSI payments provided by states
SSI payments are set by the federal government, but some states provide additional financial assistance.
SSI payments are not reduced by these state supplements that help with food and shelter costs.
The eligibility criteria and availability of these additional benefits may vary from state to state.
Several states, including California, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, have their state supplements administered by Social Security, so recipients receive a combined federal and state payment.
Some states, such as Florida and Colorado, administer supplemental payments separately.
The states with the highest SSI payments
SSI payments, when combined with state supplements, can vary significantly from state to state.
For both individuals and couples, Indiana offers the highest maximum SSI payment at $1,501.
Couples in Virginia can take advantage of $2,720, while individuals can take advantage of $1,360.
The maximum individual payment in Hawaii is $1,326 and the maximum couple payment is $2,652.
In South Dakota, SSI benefits are worth just under 33% of the state’s living wage, making them the highest value relative to the cost of living.
While the actual dollar amount may be lower, the benefits go further in terms of purchasing power.
