Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act India fine

From dogs to cats, horses, and even elephants, some humans have always crossed the limits of cruelty to the animals. And its punishment is very low especially in India but hopefully, it will be changed soon. The government has prepared a draft to amend the 60-year-old Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, proposing a penalty up to Rs 75,000 or three times the cost of the animal with jail term up to five years or both if an act of an individual or an organisation leads to an animal’s death.

Notably, only Rs 50 fine is charged from people currently.

In a written reply to a question by Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister Giriraj Singh said, “The need to amend the PCA, 1960 has been recognised by the government by introducing more stringent penalties. The amendment made includes increasing monetary penalties and sentencing provisions.”

According to The Times of India, the draft proposes crimes in three categories – minor injury, major injury, permanent disability, and death of an animal due to brutal practice. The prescribed penalty will range from Rs 750 to Rs 75,000 and a jail term of five years.
