Supermoon to light up the sky today

Updated on :

The upcoming supermoon on Monday will be the most spectacular since 1948 and people will not see another supermoon of this magnitude until 2034.

American space agency NASA described the event as “undeniably beautiful”.

The moon will appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the average full moon.

A supermoon typically refers to the coincidence of two phenomena. One is when the moon is 90 percent closer to earth in its orbit.

Since, the moon’s orbit is elliptical, at perigee — the point at which the moon is closest to Earth — the moon will be about 30,000 miles closer to Earth than at apogee — when the moon is farthest from our planet.

Syzygy, the other phenomenon, is when the earth, moon and sun all line up as the moon orbits earth.

When both perigee and syzygy occurs and position of moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, the supermoon occurs.

The moon will be at perigee at 4:52 pm in India. The supermoon will reach at its peak at 7:22 pm on November 14.

Astrological term for the supermoon is perigee-syzygy.
