Suriname Independence Day History

In the sixteenth century, Spanish, French, and English explorers first arrived in Suriname. One hundred years later, Dutch and English settlers established plantation colonies along its fertile rivers and land. In 1667, territorial disputes emerged amid the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and the Dutch retained Suriname pursuant to a peace treaty. In exchange, the English established governance over New Netherland, a former Dutch North American colony.

The city of Amsterdam established the Society of Suriname in 1683 to manage and defend the territory. The prosperous coffee, sugar cane, cocoa, and cotton plantations in Suriname were dependent on the arduous labor of African slaves. The treatment of laborers by plantation proprietors was widely recognized as abhorrent and unforgiving, even when compared to contemporary norms.

Officially, the Netherlands abolished slavery in Suriname in 1863, but genuine freedom remained elusive for much longer. Plantation proprietors took advantage of a ten-year transitional period to elicit maximum labor from their employees at the expense of compensation. After this period expired in 1873, individuals who were formerly subjugated departed from the plantations and relocated to Paramaribo, the capital city. Following World War I, Suriname was incorporated into the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands reestablished authority over the defense and foreign affairs of Suriname. The local government, however, had alternative intentions. In an effort to secure full independence, the National Party of Suriname (N.P.S) initiated negotiations with Creole members. Suriname attained independence on November 25, 1975, as a result of their fruitful endeavors. Former N.P.S. leader Henck Arron became the nation’s first prime minister, while former governor Johan Ferrier served as the first president.
