Many times there have been instances of getting conned on social media. Especially people use the image of celebrities to extort money from the people.
In yet another incident, a 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for befriending and blackmailing women on social media by posing as famous Bollywood singer Armaan Malik.
The man identified as Mahendra Varman who hails from Ulundurpet in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu had established a relationship with women on social media by posing as singer Armaan Malik.
The man also managed to receive derogatory pictures from some of the women and then later threatened to post them on social media if they did not give money to him.
The district crime branch decided to lay down a trap for the man based on the complaint of the woman. They made them came down to a certain place to receive the money and was arrested while talking to women.
The accused has been booked under various sections including 354 B (use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) 354 C (punishment for voyeurism), 384 (punishment for extortion), 506 (i) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (punishment for violation of privacy), 66D (punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the IT Act.
Post which he was then lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison. His mobile phone and electronic tablet have been seized and sent to the lab for an examination.
A police official told that the man had completed teacher training courses and till two years, he had been conducting training classes. The official added that after he quit his job, he wanted to make money through easy means that is why he decided to choose this path.
