Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam working president MK Stalin and several other party workers were detained in Tiruvarur by Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday for holding protests demanding the immediate resolution of farmers’ issues.
DMK and other opposition parties were holding protest demonstrations in various parts across the state as part of a statewide strike called to support the agitating farmers.
Farmers from Tamil Nadu, who had camped in Delhi for more than 40 days to demand a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre, have shifted their campaign to the state with the support of DMK, left parties and Congress.
Trade unions affiliated to Opposition parties, farmers’ bodies, the film fraternity and other organisations, including a lorry operators’ association also supported the strike, Scroll reported.
Police were deployed in large numbers all across the state to avoid any untoward incidents.
Petrol bunks were open with operators wearing black badges showing their support to the strike.
In Tiruvarur, farmers protested on the railway tracks.
The farmers withdrew their strike in Delhi after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami promised to take up their issues with Prime Minister.
