Four days of Pongal

The festival begins with Bhogi Pandigai which comes one day before Thai Pongal. On this day families clean their houses and throw away old items. People light small bonfires to show they are leaving old troubles behind. Bhogi also honours Lord Indra who brings rain.

The second day is Thai Pongal which is the heart of the festival. It marks the first day of the Tamil month Thai. People wake up early and cook newly harvested rice with milk and jaggery in a new earthen pot usually outside in sunlight. When the milk overflows everyone happily shouts “Pongalo Pongal.”

The third day is Mattu Pongal and this day thanks cows and bulls for helping in farming. Farmers wash decorate and feed their cattle special food. In some areas people also hold Jallikattu events where bulls play a central role.

The final day is Kaanum Pongal and this day focuses on family love and togetherness. Families visit relatives share meals play games and enjoy time outdoors as a community.

Thai Pongal rituals and cultural value

Thai Pongal is the most important day of the festival and Tamil people celebrate it across the world. It matches the Sun’s move into Capricorn which other parts of India celebrate as Makar Sankranti. While North India focuses on river baths Tamil Nadu celebrates with home rituals cooking and prayers to Lord Surya.

The main ritual is cooking the Pongal dish using fresh rice milk and jaggery. People add ghee cashews and raisins to make it special. The first serving is offered to the Sun God as thanks. Later family members eat the prasad on banana leaves. Homes look bright with kolams sugarcane and mango leaves.
