TISS Hyderabad scarps BA Social Science course, shuts hostels; know why

Irked students of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Hyderabad have come to protest against management’s decision to shut down the hostel facility on campus and scrap the BA social science programme from next academic year.

The agitated students claim that the administration has taken this decision without informing the students’ body and timed it strategically to coincide with the students’ semester-break.

Though the decision has not been officially communicated to the students or the faculty, the admission website of TISS, states that “no BA programmes are offered from Hyderabad” and a newspaper advertisement calling for admissions does not list the off-campus as having the BA-SS programme. It also says that “TISS Hyderabad campus is now a non-residential campus”.

Speaking on the matter, the director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Prof Shalini Bharat said that the course has been scrapped temporarily due to the lack of infrastructure in the institution.

“This has posed problems in managing all the programmes adequately. Hence it was decided to defer the 3-year bachelor programme till such time there is an improvement in the current situation,” she clarified.

Currently, the programme is offered from the Tuljapur and Guwahati campuses where Tiss has its own infrastructure, said the director.
