The persistent heatwave conditions are becoming a growing concern across several regions. Especially for Pitta dominated individuals it’s going to be a troublesome task to tackle the heat.

What is Pitta Dosh?

In Ayurveda, Pitta is one of the three doshas or energies that govern an individual’s physiological, mental, and emotional characteristics. Pitta dosha is responsible for body heat. Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, temperature regulation, and energy production. It is described as hot, sharp, oily, and penetrating. When fiery Pitta flares up, it creates a havoc all over the body. That’s why reducing body heat with Ayurveda starts with reducing Pitta dosha.

Diet (Ahara)

1. Cooling and Hydrating Foods: Opt for foods with sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes. Cooling fruits like melons, apples, cucumbers, and pears, along with leafy greens, are great choices.

2. Use Spices Moderately: Reduce hot and spicy foods, and season with cooling herbs like coriander, mint, and fennel.

3. Rice kanji: Soothing, gentle on digestion

4. Avoid Salty, Oily, and Fried Foods: These foods aggravate Pitta, so minimizing their intake helps maintain balance.

5. Choose Cooling Beverages: Drink cool (but not ice-cold) beverages. Herbal teas with mint or chamomile are also beneficial. Avoid caffeinated drinks.

6. Mildly spiced buttermilk (Takra): Astringent buttermilk balances heat without suppressing Agni

7. Moderate Protein Intake: Avoid heavy meats. Instead, include moderate amounts of dairy, tofu, and legumes

1. Stay cool, avoid direct sun, and take measures to prevent overheating.

2. Engage in meditation, yoga, and deep breathing to reduce stress.

3. Wake up during Brahma Muhurta (pre-sunrise hours) to avoid the sharp heat of the morning sun

4. Skip the midday nap as it slows Agni and causes Pitta imbalance.

5. Create a calming atmosphere at home and work to keep Pitta at bay.

6. Avoid overworking and ensure you get enough rest.

7. Avoid intense workouts. Opt for cooling exercises like swimming or walking.

Shirodhara

1. Pranayama: Cooling breathing techniques like Sheetali (inhaling through a rolled tongue) help regulate Pitta.

2. Abhyanga: Regular oil massage with cooling oils such as coconut or sunflower helps calm Pitta.
