They have become an inevitable part of our lives, not only as a platform for expressing our own views but also as a great source of information.

However, there are still a large number of people in India who are unaware of the right and precise use of Twitter and other social networking platforms. They indirectly tend to misuse the same, as they don’t know its real purpose.

In an attempt to educate the people about the same, Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council have come up with a remarkable effort to make the people aware of Twitter and its various implications. They’ve launched #TweeSurfing, which is the first public education initiative to address online safety issues.

After a year of conducting various online safety workshops across the country, #TweeSurfing(http://tweesurfing.in/) came up. It aims to foster a culture of positive Twitter engagement by promoting the use of counter speech, issue specific campaigns, and developing and sharing user-created best practices.

One of the most important goals of #TweeSurfing is to ensure that Twitter service remains safe for all users. They stand for freedom of expression and showing every side of a story.

Twitter has the power of mass influence and #TweeSurfing tries to do the same through its key influencers like comedians Kaneez, Sorabh Pant and Rohan Joshi.

#TweeSurfing conducts educational workshops with primary focus on rural India and government universities.

It will reach out to colleges in Chennai, Kanyakumari and Coimbatore, before heading to the North East.

#TweeSurfing will soon introduce a new 14-day virtual internship program called ‘Tweeship’. The program, delivered through Twitter DMs, and the @Tweesurfing handle, will train users who sign up on how to create Twitter campaigns for social change, and then let them practice what they have learnt in a real campaign. The modules will be available in English and Hindi.

The team believes that they will never be ‘done’ with safety and aim to take online safety to a new level.
