UK Gen Z Is Rejecting Hookup Culture: The days of Britain’s youth living on casual dates and one-night stands may be coming to an end. Some new research indicates that many people in the UK may be saying goodbye to hookup culture and hello to meaningful connections.

Based on evidence from the Lovehoney 2026 Sex Trends Report, “nearly two-thirds of the Generation Z respondents “claimed they were no longer interested in one-night stands, and there’s been a cultural shift from previous generations.”

Gen-Zers are still interested in sex, but they’re being much more discerning about who they choose to be intimate with and the trend is not indicative of an absence of appetite for intimacy and relationships. Instead, experts say, it seems Gen Z prioritizes trust, compatibility, and emotional security over anything physical.

Cost-of-Living Crisis

The prolonged cost of living crisis has been one of the driving forces changing dating practices across the UK: “Many young people are continuing to live with family or share accommodation due to the economic climate”, with a significant 77% of the UK adults living at home who participated in the report claiming that they would be “unlikely” to bring a one-night stand back to their house, drastically reducing casual opportunities.”

After a few years of incessant swiping for a multitude of reasons, the ‘swipe burnout’, the exhaustion brought on by repeated online connections. This is starting to push people back to reality, where they actually ‘meet real people at running clubs or book clubs.’

The growing influence of Artificial Intelligence has also permeated our modern relationships. Nearly half of the UK’s Gen Z and Millennial participants have also consulted AI to discuss sex and relationships, and over half (55%) said they had sought out advice for dating or intimacy. Many are using AI to craft text messages or opening lines, which the report has dubbed “chatfishing.”

Rather than seeking one-night stands for the validation, many people have instead committed themselves to more personal self-development and greater awareness of personal boundaries and emotional connection with a future partner: In fact, growing trends such as ‘solomaxxing’, have seen people choose to remain single as part of a more consciously curated lifestyle rather than because they have found themselves on the losing end of a romantic competition.

Psychologists have indicated this is because today’s young generations are seeking to create more holistic and grounded future lives. The search for a relationship will come when it comes, after they have fully committed to self-growth, independence, and happiness.
