Unified Pension Scheme Tax: The government has made a big move to support the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by giving it the same tax benefits that employees already get under the National Pension System (NPS). This step is meant to help more central government employees feel confident about choosing UPS if they want. The Finance Ministry said that including UPS in the tax system shows the government’s aim to make retirement options more secure, open, and tax-friendly for its employees.

By making UPS equal to NPS in terms of tax benefits, the government hopes to promote this new scheme better. In a statement, it was said, “The government has decided that tax benefits as available under NPS would apply mutatis mutandis to UPS as it is an option under NPS.” This means that anyone who picks UPS now will not lose any tax benefit they would have gotten under NPS.

Unified Pension Scheme Tax: Extra Time Given

Earlier the last date to decide between the Unified Pension Scheme and the National Pension System was June 30, 2025. But now the Finance Ministry has given central government employees three more months. The new deadline is September 30, 2025. The idea is to give employees more time to think clearly before they make such an important choice about their future pension.

The Unified Pension Scheme is different from NPS in a big way. Under NPS, there is no fixed pension after retirement. The money a person gets depends on how much they saved and the annuity they bought. But UPS is more secure. It gives a fixed pension after retirement, but the employee must complete at least 25 years of service. The pension amount will be 50% of the average basic salary earned during the last 12 months before retirement.

Which category of central government employees are eligible to opt for UPS?

The following central government employees can exercise the option to opt for UPS by September 30, 2025:

1. Existing central government employees who are in service as of April 1, 2025, and are covered under NPS.

  • c) Legally wedded spouses, in cases where the subscriber has superannuated or retired and passed away prior to exercising the option for UPS.
