Unimwane Day 2023: Kiribati celebrates Unimwane Day on July 15 of every calendar year. ‘Unimwane’ means ‘elder male,’ while ‘unaine’ refers to ‘elder women. The male elders of the village are honoured on Unimwane Day because a council of them used to govern the communities and make decisions regarding social, political, and economic issues in the past. Their decisions were considered the best because they were made after careful deliberation by the community’s oldest, wisest, and most experienced members. Despite the existence of the Unimwane Association, which provides advice on crucial matters, the system is largely extinct.

HISTORY OF UNIMWANE DAY

Since between 3000 B.C. and 1300 A.D., the area now known as Kiribati, primarily the 16 Gilbert Islands, has been inhabited by Austronesian peoples speaking the same Oceanic language. Around 1300 A.D., a massive exodus from Samoa coincided with the forced abolition of cannibalism, resulting in the incorporation of Polynesian ancestry into the genetic makeup of the majority of the Gilbertese. These Samoans would later introduce Polynesian languages and culture, form clans based on their Samoan traditions, and gradually merge with the already dominant indigenous clans and powers in Kiribati. Tonga and Fijian travellers also introduced Melanesian cultural elements.

In the 15th century, the Northern Islands, governed primarily by a high chief structure known as ‘uea,’ and the Central and Southern Islands, governed primarily by a council of elders known as ‘unimwane,’ developed radically different systems of government. Tabiteuea was unique in that it was the only island with a historically egalitarian society. Tabiteuea derives its name from the etymological origin ‘Tabu-te-Uea,’ which means ‘chiefs are prohibited.’

Clans and chiefs fought over resources, fuelled by animosity and reignited blood feuds, as soon as civil war broke out, with land acquisition as the primary means of conquest. This persisted well into the European visitation and colonial era, from the 17th century onwards, resulting in certain islands decimating their opponents with weapons and cannon-equipped ships that some Europeans were coerced into using by the more intelligent and persuasive Kiribati leaders. The Gilbert and Ellice Islands were a British protectorate from 1892 to January 12, 1916, and a colony until January 1, 1976.
