Officials announced on Tuesday that the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to make marriage registration compulsory for all in the state. Accordingly, the women’s welfare department has drafted a proposal that is likely to be brought in the next session of the state cabinet.

The sources say that following the Supreme Court’s order for compulsory registration of marriages, the Yogi Adityanath led BJP government has decided to include all, including the Muslims.

Earlier, during the regime of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, a committee of ministers was formed but it was protested by the Muslim community. The rule book in which the Samajwadi Party government had decided to exclude the Muslims was however never released.

The sources added that couples who are not registered will not be able to avail the benefits from schemes provided by the government.

However, in India, many states like Kerala, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, have already made it mandatory to register marriages. Also, if not adhering to rules, there are penalties by the government.
