UP Tax Exemption On EV Registration: Electric vehicle buyers in Uttar Pradesh will now get full exemption on road tax and registration fees again. The Transport Department has fixed its online system after almost 20 days, and the rule will now stay active till October 13, 2027. This move is part of the state’s Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022,.

During the past few weeks, the online registration portal was not showing the exemption, so buyers had to pay extra tax and fees when they purchased their EVs. Many people complained about being wrongly charged even though the government had promised tax-free registration.

Now the Transport Department has confirmed that these buyers will get refunds. They can visit their local ARTO offices and apply to get their money back.

Refunds and System Fixes

Officials explained that the issue began after October 13, when the old exemption period ended. Between October 13 and November 6, the system continued to charge taxes for EVs. During this time, buyers had to pay 9% road tax on vehicles costing up to Rs 10 lakh and 11% on vehicles priced above Rs 10 lakh. The department also collected registration fees of Rs 300 for two-wheelers and Rs 600 for four-wheelers.

Now that the Transport Department has updated the system, no new EV buyer will need to pay these charges. Those who already paid during the error period can apply for full refunds.

Government Extends EV Benefits

The Industrial Development Department had already issued an order on October 17 to continue financial benefits for two more years. Following that, the Transport Department released its own circular and made changes to the system to ensure the exemption runs smoothly.

Minister of State for Transport (Independent Charge) Dayashankar Singh said the decision shows the government’s strong push for green energy and electric mobility.

He said, “The exemption aims to boost clean mobility in the state.” He also made it clear that the benefit will only apply to pure electric vehicles purchased and registered in Uttar Pradesh before October 13, 2027.
