Kalaburagi: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who has a record of being undefeated in elections so far winning a record 10 consecutive elections, has indicated that he will retire from electoral politics following the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
While speaking at a public programme organised in Sedam by the government for laying foundation of several works, he said, “The voters of Gurmitkal constituency of the undivided Kalaburagi district have elected me with a margin of 9,000 votes in 1972 for the first time. The margin increased to 18,000 in the second elections, 20,000 in the third elections and 22,000 in the fourth elections from Gurmitkal constituency.
“In the previous LS election from Kalaburagi constituency, the margin of victory was 49,000. The people of Kalaburagi have elected me continuously in the last 11 elections and will elect me another time, and that will be the last time,” Kharge was quoted as saying by a leading news web portal.
Kalaburagi district (Rural) unit president of BJP, Doddappa Gowda Patil Naribol, claimed that Kharge may have said about the next elections being his last in electoral politics only to gain public sympathy.
Kharge has won an unprecedented 10 consecutive times having won the Assembly elections for an 9 consecutive times (1972, 1979, 1983, 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2009) and the recent General Elections from Gulbarga.
