It has been announced by the Ministry of Railways that the selection of candidates for the Indian Railway Management Service would begin in 2023 with an examination that has been developed specifically for this purpose and will be administered by the UPSC.

There will be a preliminary screening examination, followed by a major written examination, and then there will be an interview for the Indian Railway Management Service Examination (IRMSE). In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of Human Resource Management and Personnel said that in order to screen candidates for the second stage of the examination, which is the IRMS (Main) written examination, all candidates who are eligible will be required to appear in the Civil Services (Preliminary) examination.

The IRMS (Main) examination will be comprised of four papers, each of which will contain questions of the usual essay form organised into subject sets. The first exam will consist of two qualifying exams, each worth 300 points: Paper A will be on one of the Indian languages chosen by the candidate, and Paper B would be on English. There would be two papers on optional topics, and each paper would be worth 250 points.

In addition to that, there will be a personality exam with a total of one hundred marks. The subjects that are not required to be taken are Commerce and Accountancy, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. It has been decided that the syllabi for the aforementioned qualifying examinations and optional subjects will be the same as those used for the Civil Services Examination (CSE).

The applicants who are taking both the CSE and IRMS (Main) exams have the choice of selecting one of the optional subjects listed above for each of these tests, or they can select distinct optional subjects. The qualifying papers and optional subjects will use the same language medium and scripts as those used for the CSE examination (Main). The minimum age requirement and maximum number of opportunities to pass will be identical across all categories, as they were for the CSE.

The IRMSE will require candidates to have a degree in either engineering, commerce, or chartered accountancy as their bare minimum educational requirement. A list of finally recommended applicants from each of the four fields will be compiled by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which will then draw and announce the list in ascending order of merit. According to the announcement made by the ministry, both the preliminary and main written rounds of the CSE and IRMSE will take place at the same time.

According to what was stated, the IRMSE will be informed at the same time as the CSE. According to the Annual Programme of the Examination of the UPSC for 2023, the preliminary examination for the Combined Staff Examination is scheduled to be notified and held on February 1 and May 28 respectively.
