US Inflation Prediction: The newest U.S. inflation data helps Social Security retirees see what may happen with the 2027 COLA. Prices rose more in August, and inflation stayed higher than the Federal Reserve’s 2% goal. That has pushed expectations toward a bigger benefit change.

In the report, the Consumer Price Index climbed 0.4% from the prior month. It was up 3.4% versus the same month a year earlier. The core CPI, which removes food and power, rose 0.3% in August. Higher gas prices and other energy costs drove a lot of that jump.

Next, people are watching September inflation. That is the last month used to set the 2027 Social Security COLA. Now that August data is in, the focus is on whether September will cool off or stay firm.

Some forecasts point to inflation holding up longer, not dropping fast to the Fed’s 2% level. Still, the September CPI could nudge the COLA estimate up or down right before the final decision.

The next CPI update, which covers September 2026, is set for October 14. The date comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What Is the 2027 Social Security COLA Prediction?

Current estimates put the 2027 Social Security COLA at roughly 3.4% to 3.6%.

  • Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget: about 3.4%
  • Senior Citizens League: 3.5%
  • AARP analysis: about 3.6%
  • The Senior Citizens League’s latest estimate is 3.5%, which would be 0.7 percentage point higher than the 2.8% COLA for 2026.

AARP’s latest analysis puts the potential increase at 3.6% following the August inflation data.

How Is Social Security COLA Calculated?

The Social Security Administration does not simply use the headline CPI inflation rate to determine COLA.

Instead, the annual adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).

The SSA compares the average CPI-W for July, August and September with the average CPI-W from the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA became effective. The resulting percentage is rounded to the nearest tenth.

How Much Could Social Security Checks Increase?

If the final COLA is 3.5%, a monthly Social Security benefit of $2,000 would increase by about $70.

At a 3.6% COLA, the same $2,000 benefit would rise by about $72 per month.

In July 2026, the typical Social Security retirement check was around $2,086 each month. If the COLA rises by 3.4%, that works out to about $71 more monthly. If it rises by 3.6%, the add-on is closer to $75 per month.

Still, the real dollar jump is not the same for everyone. It depends on what each person is already receiving.

The timing matters too. When the 2027 COLA number is set, the announcement is expected in October 2026. This follows once the September CPI-W figures are released.

After that, the new rates kick in for the December 2026 COLA. Most people should see the change land in their January 2027 payment. The SSA notes that the COLA is for December, but payment usually shows up in January.

What could shift the estimate is September’s CPI-W reading. If inflation comes in hotter than expected, the 2027 COLA could end up nearer the high end of the current range. If inflation is weaker, the COLA could fall.

For retirees, remember this part. The 3.5% to 3.6% range is only a guess. It is not the final COLA.
