Serena Williams beats Sevastova to reach US Open final

World No. 1 Serena Williams on Monday registered her 308th Grand Slam win against 52-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova in the US Open, thereby breaking Roger Federer’s record by winning the most Grand Slam matches in her career.

Serena had earlier tied her score of grand slams wins with Martina Hingis when she defeated Russia’s Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and sailed into the quarter finals. With 307 wins, she was in a tie position with Federer for most number of wins.

The ecstatic star said, “Wow, it’s really exciting” as she moved ahead breaking the tie with Swiss professional Roger Federer. She said, “This is where it all started so it’s always so magical out here for me –308 sounds pretty good.”

With this Serena Williams has become the world’s top tennis player in the world.

On one hand Serena had a historic moment to celebrate, her elder sister Venus Williams had a disappointing day as she could not qualify for the next round in women’s singles tournament. The sixth seeded Venus Williams lost the fourth round against Karolina Pliskova by 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The 36-year-old Williams could not win the third tiebreaker and thus failed to qualify for quarterfinals.

In the men’s tournament, Britain’s Andy Murray cruised into the next round of the US Open after defeating Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. World No. 2 Andy Murray thrashed the 22nd seeded Grigor Dimitrov by 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. The 29-year-old Scot hit the fastest ever serve, clocking 141 mph in the game.
