USMC Day 2023 History, Activities, FAQs, Dates, and Facts About Marines Corps

USMC Day 2023: On November 10, the United States Marine Corps celebrates its birthday with a cake-cutting ceremony and a traditional gala on USMC Day. The formation of the Continental Marines occurred simultaneously in 1775. Presently, four divisions comprise more than two hundred thousand Marines (active-duty and reserve) stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Camp Pendleton, California; Okinawa, Japan; and New Orleans, Louisiana.

USMC Day History

During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress passed a resolution ordering the recruitment of “two battalions of marines” to serve as landing forces for the developing Continental Navy. The United States Marine Corps now celebrates the day that a resolution John Adams wrote and had approved in Philadelphia established the Continental Marines.

A number of crucial land and sea operations conducted by the original United States Marines during the Revolutionary War demonstrated their worth. It was the first time Marines had landed on a hostile coast when, in March 1776, they captured New Providence Island from the British under the leadership of Captain Samuel Nicholas.

Nicholas was the first commissioned officer of the Continental Marines and is considered the first Marine commander. The Marine Corps was abolished and the Continental Navy was dissolved subsequent to the attainment of United States independence in 1783.

With the progression of naval conflicts against Revolutionary France over the subsequent decade, the United States Congress was compelled to institute the United States Navy officially in May 1798. Two months later, on July 11, President John Adams ratified a measure that established the United States Marine Corps as a permanent military force under the command of the Department of Navy.

During the Quasi-War with France in the early 1800s, United States Marines engaged in combat with the Barbary raiders of North Africa. Subsequently, Marines have participated in every conflict waged by the United States, and frequently assumed the lead in combat situations. Since then, the Marine Corps has conducted over three hundred landings on foreign soil.

What constitutes a Jarhead Marine?

What was the initial designation of the Marine?

In March 1776, a Marine force under the command of Captain Samuel Nicholas captured New Providence Island, marking their initial foray onto a coast beset by adversaries. Nicholas was the first commissioned officer of the Continental Marines and is regarded as the first Marine commander.

Why are they referred to as “Devil Dogs”?

The Teufel Hunden were the official German designations for the Marines stationed in Belleau Wood, which earned them the moniker “Devil Dogs.” According to reports, Marines were directed to seize an elevation occupied by German troops while donning gas masks to protect themselves from German mustard gas.
