The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway is a strategic infrastructure project designed to reduce travel time and enhance connectivity in eastern India. Upon its completion will the distance between Varanasi and Kolkata be significantly shortened, cutting the traveling time to less than half of what it is now and ensuring fast transport would be the easiest way to transport goods and move people from the remote regions to the urban centres.

Along with the expressway, the stakeholders’ and users’ bases are large and diverse, that is, from the logistics sector and freight carriers down to the farmers and small business owners.

The corridor is expected to bring with it numerous investment opportunities that will provide the path to economic growth. The alignment of the road is designed to meet the transport needs of the most remote and backward areas, hence these regions will benefit a lot from those that had been left behind for so long due to the lack of infrastructure.

Traditionally, the Imamganj area of southwest Bihar was part of India’s Red Corridor, a stretch of districts that bore the brunt of left-wing extremism. For years, insurgent groups operated parallel governance systems, making development work difficult and keeping large areas inaccessible for infrastructure and public services. In many villages, fear of violence restricted civilian mobility and stalled economic activity.

The local inhabitants now tell the story of the expressway not as a road project but as a sign that the democratic state is taking back land and creating the “parallel government” of insurgents where they used to reign. The otter is a result of the security forces’ operations, more civic engagement, and the deliberate planning of infrastructure in the affected areas.

Using public statements, political leaders and representatives of the local community have confirmed this change. They refer to the highway as a “game-changer” that will not only cut down the time of travel and facilitate the movement of goods but also pull in bigger amounts of industrial and commercial investments in the area.
