Veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P Govardhan Reddy died in the early hours of Friday morning after suffering from cardiac arrest, aged 80. Reportedly, Reddy was on his way to Manali to attend a meeting, when he suffered the attack. He was rushed to a government hospital in Shimla but declared dead.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed shock over the Congress leader’s abrupt demise. The Chief Minister’s Office offered condolences to the bereaved family. KCR told Chief Secretary SP Singh and Resident Commissioner Arvind Kumar to bring Reddy’s body back to Hyderabad from Kulu.

Born on November 19, 1936 at Nadimpally village in Mahabubnagar district, Reddy completed Bachelors degree from Osmania University. He had been chosen to the Legislative Assembly of both Andhra Pradesh before bifurcation and Telangana after bifurcation, five times, say reports.

Reddy had also served as a member of the Legislative Council in 1979. Initially, he was voted as an MLA in 1967, and became an MP in 2012. He had also worked as a state minister.

Reddy had visited a number of countries including the Commonwealth Nations, USA and Canada on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.  He had also travelled China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong on behalf of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly to examine agricultural and industrial development in 2003.
