Viral Everest Avalanche Footage: A terrifying video, showing this massive avalanche just charging toward the Mount Everest Base Camp, has gone viral on social media and left people stunned again. The concerns about climber safety in the Himalayas are back on everyone’s mind. The footage is reportedly filmed near the Everest South Base Camp in Nepal. It looks like a big wall of snow and ice is barreling down the mountain while climbers and trekkers can only stand there, watching from farther away.

From what multiple reports and those viral clips online are saying, the avalanche happened around the Khumbu Icefall area, which is considered one of the most dangerous parts on the Everest ascent route. Luckily, there aren’t any immediate reports of major casualties tied directly to the viral avalanche video so far.

This now viral clip has been shared a lot across Instagram, Facebook, and X (which used to be Twitter). In the video, you can see a thick cloud of snow dropping fast from the Lho La side near Everest Base Camp, and it quickly creates this wave of panic among trekkers and expedition members who are nearby at the time.

Weather experts and mountaineering observers explain that avalanches like this aren’t really rare around the Everest region during the spring climbing season, especially when temperatures keep changing and glacier movement ramps up. Everest Base Camp sits at about 17,500 feet, so it stays exposed to avalanches, ice collapse events, and shifting glacier structures.

Why the Everest Region Is Becoming More Dangerous?

The 2026 Everest climbing season has already been marked by unstable glacier conditions and rising safety concerns. Reports indicate that a massive unstable ice block, known as a serac, had delayed climbing activities earlier this season in the Khumbu Icefall area. Hundreds of climbers are currently attempting to summit Mount Everest during the narrow weather window available in May.

Reuters recently reported that Nepal has issued nearly 500 climbing permits this season, highlighting the growing pressure on Everest routes despite increasing risks. Several climber deaths have also been reported across Himalayan expeditions this month, including incidents on Mount Everest itself.

Avalanche Risks at Everest Base Camp

Mount Everest has seen a number of lethal avalanche events over the years, and honestly some of it still feels unreal. One of the bleakest moments was in 2015, when avalanches set off by a powerful Nepal earthquake came down and hit Everest Base Camp, leaving more than 20 people dead, or at least that’s how the reports read.

Specialists note that the Khumbu Icefall stays especially dangerous, mainly because the glaciers keep shifting around, there are those deep crevasses, and the ice towers can be rather unstable too. Many climbers often start their climb before dawn, just to lower their time under rising temperatures.

Internet Reacts

The viral footage has sparked intense reactions online, with many users calling the visuals “terrifying,” “unreal,” and “a brutal reminder of nature’s power.” Others praised the calm response of experienced climbers visible in the clip.
