Virat Kohli goes past Brian Lara, enters top ten run getters in ODI cricket

On Tuesday, Virat Kohli created history by winning the top three most prestigious awards of the year 2018, announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Today, while playing 1st ODI against New Zealand, he enters the list of top ten run-getters in ODI format surpassing West Indies legendary batsman Brian Lara.

Before the 1st ODI started between India and New Zealand today morning at Napier, Indian skipper was just 22 runs away to enter the list of top ten cricketers with most runs in ODI format of the game. Kohli hit a boundary to go past Brian Lara’s 10,405 runs in the 16th over of India’s batting.

Virat Kohli scored 45 runs after facing 59 deliveries in the 1st ODI against New Zealand which brings the total run scored by Kohli in ODI cricket to 10,430 runs.

The 1st ODI between India and New Zealand started at 07:30 am IST at Napier. The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first and ended up setting an insufficient target of 158 runs. Indian bowlers ripped out the Kiwis for a below-par score as Kuldeep Yadav picked up four wickets at an economy of 3.9, Mohammed Shami took three wickets at an economy of 3.2 and Chahal also succeeded in taking a couple of wickets.

Team India beat New Zealand by 8 wickets in 35 overs. Shikhar Dhawan scored unbeaten 75 runs in 103 balls with the help of six boundaries, he was accompanied by Kohli who scored 45 runs after facing 59 deliveries.

In 2018, Virat Kohli played 37 matches, 47 innings in which he scored 2,735 runs at an average of 68.37 with the help of 11 centuries, 9 fifties which helped him to win Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s cricketer of the year. Kohli also got elected for Test cricketer of the year and ODI cricketer of the year.

Also, he was considered as the captain of both, ICC World Test XI and ICC World ODI XI, by getting a majority of the votes in his favour. Alongside Virat Kohli, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is the only cricketer to be featuring in ICC World Test XI and ODI XI.

Kohli also ended 2018 as the top-ranked Test and ODI batsman in the ICC Player Rankings while team India finished at the top of the table in Test and in ODI team rankings India ended on the second spot as the first position was seized by England.
