I want to return to India, but passport revoked, says Vijay Mallya

Beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Friday offered to return to India. He has moved to a Delhi trial court seeking to reverse the government’s decision to revoke his passport.

According to the reports, Vijay Mallya has submitted an application before Delhi’s Patiala House court. He told the court that he wants to return to India but cannot because his passport has been revoked.

“He (Mallya) has clear intention to cooperate but it has become impossible to travel back to the country,” Vijay Mallya’s counsel told the court.

Mallya had, in April, said that he had no plans of coming back to India and had sought a “reasonable” settlement with Kingfisher Airlines’ lenders. His passport was revoked in March this year.

Mumbai court had last week issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against promoter of defunct airline Kingfisher Airlines Ltd Mallya and its chief executive Sanjay Agarwal in a case filed by service tax.

Mallya is reported to be in London since he left India on March 2 ahead of the SBI-led banks’ consortium petitioning the Supreme Court to recover their outstanding loans amounting to Rs 9,431.65 crore, including interest that were sanctioned to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.
