Students of Washington University can opt for a new course on cultural icon Kanye West titled: “Politics of Kanye West: Black Genius and Sonic Aesthetics.”

Seventy-five students are registered for the course on the controversy magnet, and there was a waiting list to get in for the course which began this week, St Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Washington University professor, Jeffrey McCune, said the course focused on the rapper, producer and fashion designer and offers a way for students to connect issues of race, gender, sexuality, identity politics and culture.

“The course is a good way to get students to connect issues of politics, race, gender, sexuality and culture,” McCune was quoted by St Louis Post-Dispatch as saying.

“I always wanted to teach a course looking at black genius and the impossibility of black genius for the American public. We’re always thought of as maybe being articulate or smart but not really genius,” he added.

In 2015, Georgia State University offered a course on the rapper and a 2014 course at the University of Missouri focused on West and Jay Z.
