The harassment and cat-calling faced by north-eastern people in other parts of India is not really an unknown phenomenon. Often called “chinki” or “momo” they are continuously made to feel unwanted and unsafe. Not only the people but even the government authorities are a part of this sad habit as not much time has elapsed since an immigration officer at Delhi airport had asked a woman from north east, “pakka Indian ho na?”
Highlighting the issue and standing up to such perverse attitude, this poem by Vinatoli Yeptho is an eye-opener. It speaks about the objectification, the prejudice and the maltreatment of people who are a part of India and yet, are most harassed in India.
