This year several things changed drastically and the cinema was also changed by it. Many high budget movies were released on OTT platforms like Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime, and Netflix during 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted the cinema-going audience to their sofas and beds from the comfort of their home.

Amazon Prime has been making some quality South Indian films even before 2020. IMDb’s highest-rated Indian movie of 2020, Soorari Pottru is directed by Sudha Kongara and is a perfect crowd-pleaser. The storytelling is done brilliantly in this blockbuster. Notably, the story is a fictional account of the book Simply Fly, based on the life of Air Deccan founder Capt. G.R. Gopinath, and features Tamil superstar Suriya in the lead role.
2) OH MY KADAVALE – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO (IMDB RATING – 8.1)
Another Amazon Prime movie takes the spot in the top IMDB Indian movie list. Oh my, Kadavale is a romance drama that revolves around the two best friends who fall in love and get married together. But instead of ‘happy forever ending’, it turns out to be a nightmare. When things get south, protagonist Arjun gets a second chance in life that could change his path and perspective altogether.
3)C U SOON – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO (IMDB RATING – 7.9)
C U Soon is a crime thriller that keeps the audience at the edge of their sofas until the end. Needless to say, this is another Amazon Prime masterpiece. The whole production of this movie is done remotely during the pandemic. This movie is inspired by Hollywood’s ‘searching’ that used the same technique of storytelling and screenplay.
4) DIL BECHARA – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR (IMDB RATING – 7.9)
This movie was one of the most looked out films of 2020 as it was late Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput’s last work before he died by suicide in June 2020. This movie which is based on John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars came out on Disney + Hotstar. This is a heartbreaking romance-drama that features the late Sushant Singh Rajput and debutant Sanjana Sanghi in lead roles.
5) LUDO – NETFLIX (IMDB RATING – 7.6)
Directed by Anurag Basu, this gem of a movie came on Netflix. Starring multiple actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Abhishek Bachchan, and Fatima Sana Shaikh this movie had no absence of power-packed acting performances. This dark comedy brings the four wildly different stories to a point where they all overlap and in-process creating this masterpiece- Ludo. A must watch for sure.
6) LOOTCASE – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR (IMDB RATING – 7.6)
Lootcase is the perfect example of a comedy movie done right on such a low budget. This movie is offered by Disney + Hotstar and stars Kunal Khemu. Kunal clearly showed up in this movie and displayed a vibrant performance on the screen. The movie revolves around, Nandan Kumar as he comes across a suitcase and discovers it is full of cash. He takes the suitcase and soon finds himself being chased by a notorious gangster, an honest cop, and a minister, who wants the suitcase at any cost. Directed by Rajesh Krishnan this comedy entertainer is definitely a must-watch for the audience.
7) TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR (IMDB RATING – 7.6)
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior was clearly one of the best period dramas in Bollywood that came in recent years. Starring Ajay Devgan as Tanhaji Malusare, a military chieftain in the army of the Maratha king Shivaji, the movie revolves around how he leads the charge to capture the strategically important Kondhana fort guarded by the army of the fierce Rajput chieftain Udaybhan Rathod. This Om Raut directed movie was the much-needed dash of action and drama in 2020, which is now can be seen on Disney + Hotstar.
8)ANGREZI MEDIUM – DISNEY+ HOTSTAR (IMDB RATING – 7.3)
This Homi Adajania movie depicts stunning performances from the father-daughter duo of late Irrfan Khan & Radhika Manan. Kareena Kapoor and Deepak Dobriyal also feature in strong roles in the story where a Rajasthani businessman will go to any extent when his daughter decides to further her studies in London.
