To advance the English language, the Act of Union, which occurred when the Scottish Parliament and the English Parliament merged to form the Parliament of Great Britain, outlawed all Welsh music. Several factors contributed to the resurgence of Welsh music in the late 1800s: the formation of Welsh societies for music in both London and Wales; and the publication of Nicholas Bennett’s compilation of traditional Welsh melodies, “Alawon fy Ngwlad” (melodies of my Land), in the 1890s.
19th-century composers contributed to this revolution. Others, in contrast to those who composed music for the Londoners, returned to their secular origins by composing hymns and melodies. Wales produced a significant number of musically gifted greats by the turn of the century, particularly in the opera arena. The establishment of the Welsh National Opera in 1946 marked a turning point in the international recognition of Wales’ musical prowess, specifically in the realm of classical music.
After that, additional vocal icons and bands emerged, such as Bonnie Tyler and Budgie, who achieved both domestic and international renown despite at times imitating the American musical style. The B.B.C. eventually broadcast Welsh language radio programs, Noson Lowen in the 1940s and Hob Y Deri Dando in the 1960s, which completely introduced the world to Welsh musical style.
It helped that the Welsh were open to experimentation and produced punk, metal, and other genres of music, which contributed to the media worldwide labeling of this scene as “thriving.” Present-day Welsh music is thriving, delivering its distinctive style to audiences around the globe.
