West Bengal Elections 2026 Phase 1: The first round of voting for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 will happen on April 23. This is the first step in choosing the new government of the state. In this phase, voting will take place in 152 seats across different parts of the state including north Bengal and some areas in the south.

A very large number of people will vote in this phase. Around 3.60 crore voters are expected to take part. This includes about 1.84 crore men, 1.75 crore women, and 465 third-gender voters.

To make sure everything stays safe, the Election Commission has made strong security plans. Around 2,450 companies of central forces have been sent, which means close to 2.5 lakh security personnel will be on duty. More than 8,000 polling booths have been marked as very sensitive, so extra care is being taken there.

Political Fight Between TMC and BJP

This election is very important for the state. The All India Trinamool Congress wants to win again and come to power for the fourth time in a row. On the other side, the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying hard to defeat the current government led by Mamata Banerjee.

There is also a big change in the voter list this time. Around 91 lakh names have been removed after a special review process. This has made the election even more serious and competitive.

Important Seats and Candidates

Many well-known leaders are fighting in this first phase. One of the most talked about seats is Nandigram. Here, Suvendu Adhikari is contesting against Prabitra Kar, who was earlier his close aide. This seat is important because Adhikari had defeated Mamata Banerjee here in the last election.

• Adhikari is also contesting from another seat called Bhawanipur, where Mamata Banerjee is also in the race.
• Another name in news is Humayun Kabir, who is contesting even after being suspended and has been in headlines for his statements.
• In Baharampur, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is making a return to state politics after more than 20 years.
• Dilip Ghosh is also contesting from Kharagpur Sadar against Pradeep Sarkar.
• Other important areas voting in this phase include Darjeeling, Raiganj, Islampur, Balurghat, English Bazar, and Jangipur.
