What is “Expire Previous Passcode” on your iPhone: iOS 17 has introduced numerous security features, including an improved private browsing mode for Safari, Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting prevention, and the Expire Previous Passcode Now function.

This new feature intends to increase security while preventing you from having to reset your iPhone for three days after setting a new passcode and forgetting it. If you’re curious about what this new iPhone feature is and how to use it, we have the appropriate guide for you. Let’s get begun.

What does “Expire Previous Passcode Now” mean on an iOS 17 iPhone?

Have you ever changed your iPhone passcode for security purposes, only to forget it the following day or the day after? Although I am not proud of it, this has occurred to me, causing me to delete my iPhone and loose some valuable data. Apple’s iOS 17 now allows you to use your former passcode to unlock your iPhone for up to 72 hours after setting a new one.

This allows you to either remember your new passcode or, in the event that you forget it, use your previous passcode to unlock your device without having to reset it. However, this compromises your phone’s security if you changed your passcode to prevent unauthorised access with the old one. Here, “Expire Previous Passcode Now” comes into play. This new option allows you to expire your old passcode earlier than the default 72 hours, thereby enhancing the security of your device in a similar situation.

If you’re in a similar circumstance, you can use the instructions below to invalidate your old passcode.

How to use the “Expire Previous Passcode Now” feature on an iPhone

Here’s how to delete your old iPhone passcode after setting a new one on iOS 17 or later. Please note that this feature is only available on iOS 17, and if you are operating an older version of iOS, you will need to update your device. Additionally, if you have not altered your passcode within the last 72 hours, this option will be unavailable. Therefore, if you only wish to test this feature, we advise that you alter your passcode before continuing with the instructions below. Let’s get begun.

Launch the Settings application and select Face ID & Passcode.

Down the page, tap Expire Previous Passcode Now. Select Expire to validate your selection.

The previous passcode has now expired and is no longer valid. This will be indicated by a greyed-out option for the same.
