WhatsApp on Friday October 26, announced that it would start supporting stickers, essentially elaborate emoji or playful illustrations. The feature has been rumoured to hit WhatsApp for a while now and it will finally roll out to Android and iPhone users with the stable version of WhatsApp in the coming weeks.
In a blog post, Whatsapp said, “from emoji and camera features to status and animated GIFs, we’re always looking to add new features that make communicating with friends and family on WhatsApp easy and fun. Today, we’re excited to introduce a new way for people to express themselves with stickers.”
“Whether with a smiling teacup or a crying broken heart, stickers help you share your feelings in a way that you can’t always express with words,” added Whatsapp.
Create your own stickers
WhatsApp has also added support for third-party sticker packs, which means designers and developers can create their own stickers to use in the app. Would-be sticker artists will need to publish their packs as an app on the Google Play or Apple App Store. From there, users can download the apps and then make use of the packs inside WhatsApp. The company has provided a template that it claims requires “minimal development or coding experience.”
